Grandpa Hadfield - Viewing and Funeral

Posted by Amber in ,

The viewing for Grandpa Hadfield was Sunday, February 21st at their church building. We met early to help set things up and for the grandkids to rehearse the song medley we were going to sing for the funeral. Brian and Melody graciously opened their home if anyone needed a break or needed somewhere else to take their kids for both the viewing and funeral. The also provided dinner for the family on Sunday. Those Hadfields sure make for an awesome family :D

This floral arrangement had each family grouped with everyone's names on seed packets. Grandpa was well-known for his gardening.

Grandpa's kids sure did an amazing job with the display. It was definitely apparent Grandpa's many skills, talents, and passions. He lived a full life.

Display - family photos, quilts, crafts, music, and so much more.

The grandkids spend most of their time in the nursery. Melody also came prepared with some crafts to do.

Part of the Family Night song that is tradition in the Hadfield family, which was included in the medley during the funeral. This recording is the third verse.

Matt and I with his Great Aunt Karen.
Henlie finally decided to make a frame. Matt picked the generation picture we took at family camp when she was just a baby.

Grandpa touched many lives. The line extended down the hall, around more halls, and through the chapel. We heard of people who actually came in and then left because the line was so long.

The funeral was Monday, February 22nd. We started with another viewing. We just hung out while the siblings greeted people. Then we moved to the chapel for the service. It was rather eventful. Grandma wasn't doing so well. We actually called 911 and they took Grandma to make sure she was okay. Mostly the stress of everything and then not eating well took its toll on her body. She was okay, though.

Waiting during the viewing prior to the funeral.

Devan and Michelle reading to Henlie and Charlie.
Daddy and Andrew taking silly selfies :)

After the funeral, we headed to the cemetery to lay Grandpa to rest. It is also the cemetery where Matt's stillborn brother, Joshua, is buried, so we visited his grave as well.

After a lot of family and such a tender time, we wanted to still keep our family close. What turned into a couple siblings over for pie turned into the whole family joining us for dinner, pie, and FHE Monday night as well. It was good to hang out with them all a little more, even though it wasn't anything "special" per se. Hanging out with family is what makes anything special.

We are so blessed to be a part of such a wonderful family. We are also very blessed to have the Gospel of Jesus Christ to guide us and offer us comfort with the knowledge it brings that our family can be together forever.

Provo City Center Temple Open House

Posted by Amber in , ,

We had tickets to go to the Provo City Center Temple open house on February 20th. We were going with Jason and Camile. We were supposed to go through the 3:15pm tour, but that did not happen. Holy people, Batman! It was like 4:15pm or so I think by the time we went through. Fortunately, my kids were pretty well-behaved. At least during all that waiting, we got to watch a fun little movie on Aunt Camile's phone....that told us we're getting another cousin! Woot!

Andrew and Me in front of the the Christus statue in the gazebo.
Never mind our ultra-smooth faces. My forward-facing camera has a feature to soften skin tone, and Andrew had turned it all the way up....

♪ I love to see the temple... ♪
Daddy and Henlie looking back across the grounds at the temple.

It was fun to tell Henlie about our experiences with the old Tabernacle. I also loved the elements they were able to save and reincorporate into the new temple. Going just three days after we lost Grandpa was especially poignant as we could talk to Henlie about sealings, being a forever family, and the Plan of Salvation on a very applicable level.

Family selfie

Of course, since we walked clear down to the end of the grounds, Henlie decided she did want to go up to the fountain haha

This is my favorite.
Henlie wouldn't look at me for a picture, so Daddy told her to look at him instead.
How CUTE is this?!?

Andrew and Mommy in front of the fountain.

Fun story in relation to this awesome teaching moment. As we were leaving the temple grounds, we were talking about how one day, Grandpa will be resurrected and will live again and the same will happen to us after we have died. It's been a little too long for me to remember the entire exchange, but Henlie said, "That's weird." haha I just told her, "Welcome to being a Mormon. We're a little weird." :) It is true, though. Compared to the rest of the world, we're a little weird. But that's okay :)

My family put up with me to stand in line for the free backdrop picture.
Thankfully, Henlie is smiling :)

I'm so grateful for the temple and the opportunities we have to be together as families for eternity. I am grateful for a loving Savior who provided the atonement for us so we can have a means of returning to our Heavenly Father and our families again. I am so grateful for my family and the strength, support, and love they give. We truly are blessed to have so many temples around us here in Utah. Thankfully, the rest of the world continues to get more and more temples closer to them as well.  The Gospel is true and we have a Father in Heaven who loves us very, very much. Our big brother, Jesus, truly did come to earth to provide the ultimate example and offer Himself as sacrifice to atone for our sorrows, pains, afflictions, and sins. I don't partake of His gift like I should, but I know as we try to do better each day and repent when we fall, He will have grace sufficient for us all.

Little Tidbits - Part 30

10 16 15 - Henlie was so nice and shared her toys with Andrew.

10 16 15 - Why yes, that is a banana in her pants :)
(Don't worry, it's a plastic one.)

10 19 15 - Andrew wasn't happy while I was trying to finish my lunch, so I laid him in my lap face down....he tried to eat my knees!

10 19 15 - Henlie put her doll blanket on Andrew. (Side note, my mom made that for me. I'm glad I have so many things she crocheted.)
Top left - she claimed Andrew was tickling her when he'd reach for her.
Bottom right - one of her goals in life is to have Andrew hold her hand. She loves it when he occasionally complies :)

From Facebook 10 19 15 -
Totally forgot to post yesterday, but we saw one of those large black birds perched on Moroni's hand/trump when we drove past the temple on the way to church. It was amusing to me. Didn't have time to snap a pic, though.

10 20 15 - Andrew chewing on his toys.

10 21 15 - I looked over and saw this. I was amused.

From Facebook 10 22 15 -
Andrew had his last well check in Peru today. He got a flu shot and a pneumococcal shot. He didn't appreciate either. He weighs 6.48 kg or 14 lbs 4.6 oz. He is 62.5 cm long or 24.6 in. His head circumference is 43.5 cm or 17.1 in. Aside from everyone having a cold (Andrew seems to be on the up side of his), he is a pretty happy baby. Still not quite rolling or crawling, but he's getting closer. My favorite things are his smile and his giggles. smile emoticon

October has officially become the month with the most blog posts this year. And I'm not finished yet!

10 23 15 - Apparently what I recognize as the universal crosswalk sign wasn't good enough, and they're changing them to pictures of walking stick figures. Cooler? Yes. Cost effective? No.

10 23 15 - We had taken a walk to get out of the house and put Andrew to sleep. We took a quick picture outside the huaca.
Please ignore Henlie's runny nose. There were a few days it was just a faucet.

10 23 15 - I have too many pictures of my children sleeping haha

10 25 15 - I was taking pictures of the mattress to sell it, and she wanted a picture with the tag.
Silly, but it turned out super cute :)

Hot cocoa just isn't the same here. At least it is warm! smile emoticon ‪#‎PointoutPositives‬

10 25 15 - Pictures with my kids. It was a Sunday. Matt was working due to the campaign and stake conference was being broadcast. The kids were both sick, so we stayed home and watched church videos online instead.

From Facebook 10 25 15 -
Had tomato soup with open-faced cheese sandwiches on the menu for dinner today. I suppose it was nice of the weather to comply by cooling off. Makes it even better. ‪#‎PointoutPositives‬

From Facebook 10 25 15 -
Henlie keeps telling me over and over, "Thank you for the hot soup. I like hot soup when you make it," and other variations smile emoticon

10 26 15 - He did this himself. I laughed.

10 27 15 - Playing at the park. Henlie loves sticks.

10 27 15 - Favorite tree. Okay, one of them. I'm going to miss Peru's plants.

10 27 15 - Had to snap a photo of our building before we move. I've kindly highlighted our house for you :)

10 27 15 - Henlie made Andrew laugh.

10 28 15 - Had pizza the night before. Realized the next day that it wasn't even Halloween, and Pizza Hut was using Christmas boxes already!

10 28 15 - Actually did my hair one day :)

10 30 15 - Twitch was streaming The Joy of Painting, and both of my children (and myself) were enthralled. :)

Thankful Thanksgiving Countdown - November 5th

Posted by Amber in , , , , , , ,

November 5th, Thursday, was a big day for us. We moved back to the United States of America! Our flight left Lima at 2am, so we actually left our house in San Isidro around 9:30pm Wednesday. We got there with plenty of time. Andrés and Licet met with us. They wanted to get some dinner with us before we went through security, but between waiting for Delta to open their lines and then Andrew's lap ticket not being purchased (again), it took much too long. Like we were the last ones from our flight to get through the ticket counters. Blessings, though, were seeing a friend from our ward, Graciela, who was escorting a missionary; the airport personnel letting Andrés come to the ticket counter with us since we had three trolleys of bags; and Henlie being relatively good while we waited an eternity for them to figure out the ticket. Oh! And giving Andrew a checked bag, even though he didn't have a seat. It meant we had one less overage :)

Andrés misses Andrewcito.

Anyway, we finally made it through chatted for a few minutes with Andrés and Licet, changed Andrew, and went through security. In Peru, no one can bring liquid in excess of 3 oz through security. (In the US, children can. It just has to be tested.) Also, I was wearing Andrew in the wrap, and they had to manhandle us both to make sure I wasn't hiding anything between us. In the US? They wipe your hands with a little strip and run it through a machine to check for residues. I don't think we had to take our shoes off in Peru, though. So, bonus?

Matt had to sign some stuff for Andrés.

Our flight to Atlanta was super empty, which was kind of nice because people could move around and find nicer sleeping arrangements. I felt like the staff was a little more lax on their duties, though. Like, they're getting ready for landing and still picking up breakfast trays. Oh well :) They were nice enough. We also made super good time, like we landed 30-45 minutes before schedule in Atlanta. This worked out pretty well for us. We had a scheduled 2 hour layover, but between landing early and our flight to Salt Lake being delayed 31 minutes (the pilot of the plane before us didn't show, so they had to find a new one), we had plenty of time to go through customs, get our stuff rechecked, and change both children's diapers and put them in actual clothes (they flew in their PJs because of the time :))

My family sleeping while I watch Inside Out. I actually fell asleep the last like 5 minutes and had to rewind it once I woke up :)

My cute little pancakes. However, the only fruit I was able to eat in that fruit cup were the watermelon pieces. I'm sorry, but those are not pineapples! We miss good fruit :)

And then we flew to Salt Lake! Larry was kind enough to come up with the truck so we could get all of us and our things home. I think we were the only ones from our flight who were actually staying in Salt Lake City. I feel like we made decent time getting out to the baggage carousel, but there were no other people there. In fact, two airport workers were loading all of it on a large cart. Then they offered to wheel it for us, but Matt didn't have any US dollars smaller than $100, so he was just going to get carts and do it ourselves. Instead, he did pay the one guy in soles, and we met up with Grandpa and got loaded in.

Matt and Andrew waiting in Atlanta.

 Asleep in Grandpa's truck.

 We made it!

It was so good to be back. Even better is being able to go to Grandma's to have dinner. Devan and Kayla came over after and Devan helped Matt put our bed together so we had somewhere to sleep. It has been very nice being back. (Except the cold!) But having family around and being able to speak English has been good. And now we are still putting our house back together, so that is why I am super behind on my thankful posts!

Henlie was so excited to go back to Utah to see Charlie!

Other thankful tidbits from the trip:
Elder Brown. Poor kid was going home (to Bozeman, Montana! He appreciated Big Bang Theory for putting them on the map haha) after injuring, or rather, re-injuring, his ACL after two weeks in the MTC in Peru. He does plan to reenter the field when he's fully healed up. We had a good chat, and it is super nice to have common ground with someone instantly due to religion.

We also sat in front of another missionary who was going home from Tennessee, Spanish speaking, on our way to SLC. Again, I think it's fun traveling with missionaries :)

Drinkable milk. In Atlanta waiting for our flight, we bought some drinks. Matt and Henlie got juice, but they had chocolate milk...and I totally got some. And it was delicious.

Henlie's patriotism. In Atlanta, there was a big American flag going through security. She saw it and said, "There's my flag!" She's super excited to live in her country and get to see her flag all the time. Although, she's not so good about sharing it. ("It's my flag, not Andrew's flag.")
