Maybe we're weird. Maybe we're "cultured," but we like to go on educational outings. Usually it's things like the zoo or aquarium or whatnot. We don't do your typical art museum hardly ever. However, somehow via the Internet (probably Facebook, to be more specific), I found out that the Utah Museum of Fine Arts had a free day coming up. Not only was it a free day, but it was their last weekend before closing for over a year for some major remodeling. And since they were closing, they were doing a huge kick-off party event as well. Score!
So Saturday, January 16th, we headed up to Salt Lake to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. I'd never been. We started with one little tour that went over some Greek, Roman, and Indian stuff. Unfortunately for me, Henlie was getting over it and didn't want to really look at many of the exhibits after that. I still made her walk through some of it before we went downstairs for the Saturday Family activity. And because I'm me and a huge advocate (although not much of an outspoken one) for the #NormalizeBreastfeeding movement, I had to snap a couple pictures in the Jesus section (I really don't know what the exhibit was, but it was a lot of Christian-themed stuff.) It was neat to see some stuff akin to that at the catacombs in Peru, too. :)
The family activity was creating scarabs out of clay. So they sent us back up to the Egyptian exhibit to find the scarabs for some inspiration, and then we could go back and pick out some clay. Henlie really wanted pink, but they didn't have any. However, adults could also get a kit, so we picked a red kit and a white kit to mix together. This was not your typical play-clay, though. Oh no, this was some heavier duty stuff you could then bake and keep your little scarab creation forever. So the red really left your hands red, and it was hard to mix the two. Matt is pretty awesome, though, and managed to make some pink for Miss Henlie. They had some tools and hieroglyphics translations to help you design your scarab. After that, it was time for a potty break before leaving to find some lunch.

We ended up going to La Carreta in Orem for some Peruvian food. I got mine a la pobre (because I love the fried egg on rice :)). However, that also includes a fried banana, which I am not a fan of, in either country. I gave some to Andrew, because.. well.. banana. However, that banana was so hard that he couldn't gum it. It is sad we can't get awesome fruit in Utah. Oh well. We had an enjoyable lunch and then headed home.
I love Saturdays with my family, especially when we get to go on fun outings! And I definitely would go back to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts in the future. It won't become a regular like the zoo, but I would like to explore it more and am interested to see what they do with the remodel :)
